Cleveland

6th-May-2022

… He stayed on well to win his maiden over nine furlongs on soft ground at the back-end of his juvenile season in 2020.  He didn’t run last season as a three-year-old, and he could only finish fifth in the Listed Devoy Stakes on his return this season, but he ran well for a long way there.  Weak in the market beforehand, he travelled well through his race in fourth place, and he made good ground to join the leaders on the far side at the two-furlong pole before he tired, as lack of a recent run probably took its toll.

The winner of that race, Layfayette, has since come out and won the Alleged Stakes and the Mooresbridge Stakes.

Cleveland should come on considerably for that run and, by Camelot and out of Venus De Milo, who won a Munster Oaks and finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks and in the Irish Oaks, there is every chance that he will stay this stayers’ trip today.  He holds entries in the Saval Beg Stakes and in the Ascot Gold Cup, and he will have to run well today if he is going to take up one or both of those entries.

CLEVELAND WON (ADV 7/1, SP 6/1)
