Hurricane Lane

13th-May-2021

High Definition could blow the Dante apart.  He was a hugely exciting juvenile last season, and he could just be head and shoulders above his rivals today.  However, he missed his intended engagement at Lingfield on Saturday, this will be his seasonal debut, and there is a chance that he will not be at his best today.  He could get beaten today and still go on and win the Derby.

I am taking a chance on Hurricane Lane against him.  The Godolphin colt stayed on strongly to win his maiden over a mile on heavy ground at Newmarket last October, and he was strong again in the finish in seeing off Maximal in a conditions race over 10 furlongs at Newbury on his debut this season.

He led all the way that day, but he didn’t set a fast pace, which suggests that connections may have expected him to come on for that run in terms of race fitness.  His undoubted stamina might have come into play more if he had gone faster.

He might be better over a mile and a half in time, but he could get out in front here and get rolling, use his stamina and his race fitness to his advantage.

The form of that Newbury race is working out well, Maximal ran well to finish second in the Dee Stakes next time, while fourth-placed River Alwen won a handicap at Newmarket on Guineas weekend, and Hurricane Lane should be able to step forward from that, his seasonal debut and just his second run ever.

HURRICANE LANE WON (ADV 13/2, SP 5/1)
