Nugget
18th-Apr-2021
I had Danyah in mind for the Spring Cup after his good run to finish fourth in the Lincoln, when we had him on side, when he was too keen through the early stages of the race. But it appears that many others had too, and he is shorter than he should be in my book.
Nugget represented the value of the race in my book. Richard Hannon’s horse was a progressive three-year-old last season, winning two of his four races and finishing second in the other two.
Raised by 5lb to a mark of 92 after his win over a mile on fast ground at Newmarket last July, he continued his progression with a fine run on his debut this season to finish third behind Astro King in a one-mile handicap at Nottingham. He didn’t have a lot of luck in-running that day, he was short of racing room at the two-furlong marker and, switched back towards the inside rail, he again ran out of room close home. He can be marked up at least a little on the bare form of that run.
He should come on for that run too, his seasonal debut. The handicapper left him on his mark of 92 after that and, with Ryan Moore back on board again today, he could go beyond that mark today. I like his draw too in stall two.
Matthew Flinders was also on my shortlist, but I am happy to rely on Nugget.
