Sam Spinner
25th-Nov-2017
Sam Spinner ran a cracker last time to finish second to Court Minstrel in the Silver Trophy, a two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle at Chepstow. He led from early that day, and he looked a likely winner on the run between the final two flights, but he made a mistake at the last and drifted to his right, which allowed Court Minstrel in. Even so, it was a big run. He had Wholestone behind him in fourth, and the race was run in a good time.
The handicapper raised him by 3lb for that run to a mark of 139, and that is fair. He should progress from that, his seasonal debut, and he is only five and has run just five times over hurdles, so he has lots of scope for progression anyway.
He is stepping up in trip today to three miles, but he is bred for it, and he races over two and a half miles as if he will get further. He is a tough front-runner, the type who should be well suited to heavy ground at Haydock, where track position is paramount. He has never been out of the first two in his seven-race career, and his form on soft ground reads 121. There is a lot to like about him.
SAM SPINNER WON (ADV 9/1, SP 6/1)
