Star Rider

27th-Jul-2016

Star Rider has never raced beyond two miles, but she has won over two miles on soft ground at Newmarket, and she shapes as if she will get further.  There could be significant improvement to come from her over this extreme trip.

That win over two miles was on her last run last season, at Newmarket in October, when she stayed on really well to beat Wind Place And Sho.  It was a career-best from Hughie Morrison’s filly, and it was the greatest stamina test with which she had been presented in her life.

She has run twice this season.  She was a good third behind Tioga Pass over a mile and a half at Goodwood on her debut, and she followed up by finishing third to Boite, again back at Goodwood, over a mile and six furlongs.  On both occasions she shaped as if she would appreciate stepping up in trip again.

Given her good Goodwood form – which is obviously a positive, returned to the track – it is probable that her trainer has had this race in mind for her since the start of the season.  The handicapper has left her on her mark of 85, and that is a mark off which she can win a staying handicap like this.  It is the ideal race for her.

Morrison won this race in 2007 with Secret Ploy, and his horses are in good form these days.  Star Rider has a nice weight of 8st 13lb and, a four-year-old who has raced just 11 times, she has plenty of scope for progression at staying trips.
