Velox

5th-Jul-2014

Velox was a nicely progressive three-year-old last season, he did well to finish as close as he did on his final run of last season at Chester, having raced in rear off a slow pace.

He was well beaten on his debut this term at Newmarket, but he shaped as if he would come on for the run, which he duly did when he finished seventh behind Abseil in the Investec Mile at Epsom on Derby weekend.

He was unlucky there. He was coming with a nice run up the rail when Abseil and Red Avenger rolled down into him and hampered him badly. It was a rough race, there were plenty of hard-luck stories, but Velox would have been third at worst, possibly second, had he not been hampered.

Unlucky losers are often over-bet, and there is a little bit of a worry about Velox in that context today. But he is only 1lb higher today, his rider takes 5lb off, and he was a progressive handicapper going into the Epsom race. He should get the fast pace that he needs here and, given normal luck in-running, he should go close.

VELOX WON (ADV 11/2, SP 11/2)
