Son Of Flicka

14th March 2012

With the vast majority of bookmakers paying five places, this is obviously a good each-way race, and I am also backing Son Of Flicka (as well as Balgarry) at 28/1. He ran a cracking race in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ race last year, only just getting claimed in the last few strides by Sir Des Champs, and he also ran really well at the track at the October meeting in 2010 when third off a mark of 137. He was racing off a mark of 140 when just touched off in the Martin Pipe race last year, after which he was raised to 148, but in just five runs since then he has dropped back down to a mark of 135.

The handicapper may just have been a bit premature in dropping him so much, and it is encouraging to read this morning that this has been the aim for the horse all year. Judged on yesterday’s results, Donald McCain has his string in peak form and, coming here off a two-month break, Son Of Flicka should be primed to run for his life once again (his run at the Festival last year was off a break of four months). He could easily out-run his odds off 28/1.

SON OF FLICKA WON (ADV 28/1, SP 16/1)
