Dangerous Midge
3rd-Jul-2010
I am taking a bit of a chance with Dangerous Midge here ... Most impressive in winning a 10-furlong handicap on his debut this season at Doncaster, he ran a shocker when sent off as favourite for Hanoverian Baron’s race at York next time, despite an 11lb hike. His run in the Duke of Edinburgh last time at Ascot was much more encouraging, however. He did have to be ridden along in the early stages of the race, but he ran on well, despite the fact that he had to race wide throughout. He stayed the trip well, which was a concern going into the race.
Brian Meehan has been going through a quiet enough season, but he had two winners yesterday and there are signs that he is turning the corner. Dangerous Midge has raced just seven times in his life, he is progressive, and his run in the Duke of Edinburgh was a lot better than seems to be appreciated, given how the race panned out for him. The handicapper has dropped him back down to a mark of 96, which means that he has a 10lb pull with Hanoverian Baron on York running. He may not be one to be implicitly trusted, but he is talented, and he is worth backing at 12/1. With only 15 runners now, he is a win-only bet.
DANGEROUS MIDGE WON (ADV 12/1, SP 17/2)
