Wolf Moon
15-Nov-2009
This is fairly wide open, there are many with chances, but I am surprised that they have put Wolf Moon in so big this morning, and he is worth a small bet at 18/1. Martin Keighley’s gelding shaped with a great deal of promise last spring, winning over an inadequate two miles and Towcester and then staying on well when stepped up to three miles at Uttoxeter on his next start, to get the better of the 114-rated Khumbu, with the pair of them pulling clear. On his only start since, back at Towcester 10 days ago, he again shaped with a degree of promise and wasn’t punished to finish fourth behind Rathcor, not beaten far. He gets to race off the same mark of 118 today, but he has run just three times over hurdles, and he is most progressive. He is by Presenting, so the ground is a bit of a worry, but he shaped well on good to soft ground last time, and at 18/1 you can take the chance that he will handle it.
Old friend Sangfroid has a big chance, but he is a better horse on better ground and he may just be in the handicapper’s grip now on soft ground. Adroit Approach would be interesting if you knew that he was fit on his seasonal debut, Erzen is progressive but has to step up a lot on what he has done to date to be competitive here, while Silk Affair will love the ground and handles the track, but, in a wide open contest, I am happy to back Wolf Moon at 18/1.
