Skukuza

Skukuza finished only sixth of the eight runners in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom on Friday, but there was still plenty of encouragement to be gleaned from his run. Held up early on by Ryan Moore, he was still last of the eight runners as they started to turn for home, but he travelled nicely into his race. He didn't have the pace to get to Seagulls Eleven and Persica when they quickened, but he stuck to his task in the style of a horse who would have preferred a stiffer test of stamina, on his first run at Epsom.

Ed Dunlop's horse is better suited by the test that The Curragh presents. He won a premier handicap on his first run there on Irish Guineas weekend last year, and he beat subsequent Group 2 winner Alakazi in the Listed Celebration Stakes on Irish Derby weekend last year on his second. He will be of interest when he goes back to The Curragh, and it wouldn't be surprising if his trainer has been working towards Irish Derby weekend again this year for a little while.
