Grenadier Jed

Grenadier Jed stuck to his task well in finishing third behind Hold The Serve in the two-mile-five-furlong handicap hurdle that opened proceedings at Kempton's Dovecote Hurdle meeting last month. Harry Kimber set him off in a prominent position, in second place, just behind the early leader Bourbali, but he gradually drifted back in the field behind a good pace, he had drifted back to fifth place by the time they were racing over the fourth last and third last flights towards the home turn. He did close up from there, he actually was only about four lengths behind the leader as they turned for home, but they got away from him again early in the home straight. Still fifth jumping the second last flight, he stayed on from there to take third place, just failing by a half a length to catch Royal Infantry for second.

This was still another step forward by Robert Walford's horse, over a trip that is surely inadequate for him now at this level. He did win over the intermediate trip at Taunton last February, and again at Fontwell in November but, out of a half-sister to Prix du Cadran winner Sergeant Cecil, he shaped here as if he will appreciate a step up in trip now. He was raised by 2lb for this to a mark of 120, but that mark could under-rate him as he steps up in trip.
