World Of Fortunes
World Of Fortunes kept on well to finish second behind Grainne A Chroi in the Grade 3 Quevega Hurdle at Punchestown last month. Settled in mid-division by Jordan Gainford through the early stages of the race and along the inside, she got caught a little on the inside of a grouping field as they raced out of the back straight, and a slow jump as the third last flight just as the pace was increasing left her sixth of the six runners and playing catch-up as they raced to the home turn. She picked up well though, she passed early leader Pebble Bleu before the second last flight, but she wasn't great at that obstacle either, which checked her momentum, and meant that she had to go three wide around the home turn, outside Baby Kate and Kilbarry Saint. She continued her forward drive into the home straight though, which took her past Lantry Lady and into second place, and she closed on the winner all the way to the line, getting to within less than a length by the time she got to the winning line.
It was a good run by James Kenny's mare on her first run since she finished fourth in a listed mares' hurdle run over three miles at Doncaster before Christmas. The early pace was not strong, as evidenced by the winner's finishing speed of over 110% of overall speed, which wasn't ideal, and she gets further than this intermediate trip, so she did well to get as close as she did, coming from as far back as she came. She wasn't wearing the cheekpieces that she has worn of late either, and her best form is on better ground. She should be able to improve on this now, back over a longer trip and back on better ground and ideally with a stronger pace, and perhaps with cheekpieces re-instated. She holds an entry in a listed mares' hurdle at Kelso this Saturday, and she will be of interest if she lines up in that.
