Akecheta

Akecheta is the other horse to take out of the 10-and-a-half-furlong fillies' handicap at York on Friday. Kevin Coleman's mare hasn't won yet this season, but this was another fine run in defeat. Back in the field early on, she made nice progress on the outside early in the home straight. She travelled best of all at the three-furlong marker, and she picked up well on the near side when Shane Gray asked her for her effort. In the end, she couldn't get to Cape Flora, but time may prove that she faced an improbable task, conceding 18lb to the Gosden filly, and she kept on well enough to dead-heat for second place behind her with Blessed Star, with the progressive Zgharta over a length back in third.

Akecheta hasn't won since she won on her racecourse debut on soft ground at Tipperary in May last year, but she has continued her progression this season on ground that has probably been faster than ideal for her. She goes well on good ground, and she proved at York that she could operate on fast ground, but the suspicion remains that she could take a nice step forward now when the ground eases again. She is a mare to keep in mind as we move into the autumn.
