Treasured Royal
Treasured Royal did well to get as close as she got in the two-year-old median sires' series maiden that opened proceedings at The Curragh last Saturday. Racing from stall two on the far side in a race in which the near-side horses came to the fore, she was keen enough too through the early stages of the race. The larger near-side group had an advantage of a couple of lengths over the smaller far-side group from early, and Gary Carroll had to take Treasured Royal back behind the leaders in the far-side group in order to try to get her to settle a little better. No better than 16th or 17th on the run to the two-furlong marker, she moved forward nicely when her rider asked her to and she challenged on the far side, moving into second place on the run to the furlong marker. But her run flattened out from there as her early exertions took their toll, and she faded to finish fifth, losing two places in the final few strides.
It was still a really encouraging start by Gavin Cromwell's newcomer. Picked up for a mere €4,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Breeze-Up Sales in May, she was strong in the market before this, her racecourse debut. Out of a sister to Banner Road, who won over six and seven furlongs as a juvenile, and a half-sister to Rattle And Hum, who won over a mile and five furlongs, she should benefit from this experience. She could improve too for a step up in trip, but she will be of interest wherever she goes next.
