Break My Soul
Break My Soul shaped once again at Newbury in the two-mile mares' handicap hurdle like a well-handicapped horse in whom there is surely a good prize.
Wearing a hood for the first time here, she travelled well through her race as is her wont, and she looked set for victory when she went on at the third last flight. Still clear on landing over the final flight, which is probably around about the point at which she traded at 1.13 in-running, she kept on up the run-in, but she was just run down close home by Tour Ovalie.
This is the third race in a row in which Break My Soul has travelled like the most likely winner, only to come away without first prize. Nicky Henderson's mare is a keen-going individual, and the hood was probably a big help to her at Newbury, but she could do even better, held up for longer off a stronger pace. She is creeping up the handicap without winning, another 4lb takes her up to a mark of 130, but she has just turned six and there should be more to come from her. She goes well on goodish ground, and she will be of greatest interest now in a big-field, strong-pace, two-mile handicap hurdle in which she can be covered up early on and smuggled into the race late.
