Siog Geal
Siog Geal did well to keep on to take second place behind Kapability in the mares' bumper at Aintree on Sunday. Settled back in the field early on by Jonathan Burke, she made some ground wide around the home turn, and she moved up nicely towards the stands side to join the front rank at the two-furlong marker. Kapabillity travelled well towards the far side at that point, and she picked up nicely, quickly putting four or five lengths between herself and her rivals. Siog Geal couldn't match that turn of foot, but Fergal O'Brien's mare stayed on nicely towards the near side to take second place, closing to within two lengths of the winner in the end and pulling almost four lengths clear of her other rivals.
This was a race that was not run at a strong pace, and she was fastest of all through the final three furlongs. The winner looks like a pacier mare, her dam is a half-sister to an AQPS winner over a mile and a half, and she was well positioned, up with the sedate pace. Siog Geal had to come from further back, she had to do a lot of running, a little wider than ideal, in order to move into a position from which she could challenge. She won her only point-to-point too for Noman Lee last February, a point-to-point from which the runner-up has since come out and won a bumper at Tipperary. Out of a half-sister to Silver Quay, who reached a peak rating of 97 over middle distances on the flat, Siog Geal will be of interest in another bumper now if connections decide to have another go in a bumper, and she will also be of interest when she starts to jump hurdles.
