The Short Go
The Short Go put up a big performance in the three-mile-one-furlong handicap chase at Cheltenham on Saturday to finish second to his stable companion Senior Chief. Settled back in the field early on by Jordan Gainford, he made a really bad mistake at the fence on the run up to the top of the hill final time, from which he did well to stand up. He travelled well to the top of the hill though and, while he came under a hill on the run to the home turn, he picked up well. He moved into fourth place on the inside around the home turn and, angled towards the outside on the run to the second last, he stayed on well from there over the last and up the hill. While he just couldn't get to his stable companion, he ran all the way to the line, pulling 11 lengths clear of Broadway Boy in third.
Henry de Bromhead's horse did well to get into the race from the rear. The early pace was not strong, and the prominent racers dominated. The four horses who, with The Short Go, filled the first five places, occupied the first four places from flagfall. The Short Go started off in 12th place and gradually made his ground toward the leaders. He was the only horse who was able to get into the race from back in the field. Winner of a novices' chase over three miles on soft ground at Clonmel last September, he is only seven, this was just his fourth chase, and he remains unexposed as a staying chaser.
