Lord Of Thunder

Lord Of Thunder ran well in the two-and-a-half-mile novices' handicap chase that opened proceedings at Cheltenham on Saturday. Settled nicely in mid-division behind a solid pace that Lisnamult Lad set, he moved up on the outside on the run around the home turn, and he was just set to mount a challenge when he got in tight to the second last fence and came down. Lisnamult Lad went on to win, he saw off the challenge of Weveallbeencaught and Riskintheground, but it is probable that, at worst, Lord Of Thunder would have been in there among them challenging.

It was a nice performance by Joe Tizzard's horse, and his jumping up to the point of his departure had been good for a chasing debutant. Second in his only point-to-point for Sam Curling, he was progressive last season over hurdles, he won his last two, both at Wincanton on soft and heavy ground. He proved here though that he can operate on better ground too, and he will be of interest wherever he goes now. He is lightly raced and, from the family of Harbout Pilot, he could improve as he steps up in trip. He has raced just six times under Rules, this was his first chase, and he has the potential to go beyond his handicap mark of 129 now over fences.
